EU Signs Single Mobile Charging Port Agreement for Devices. Apple Must Change iPhone Connectors By 2024

Apple will need to replace the connector on iPhones it sells in Europe by 2024, as EU legislators and countries on Tuesday reached an agreement to create a single mobile charging port that can charge mobile phones, tablets, and cameras.

This agreement is a first in the world and was reached after companies had failed to reach a consensus on a solution. More than a decade ago, the European Commission had advocated for one mobile charging port.

Both Android and iPhone users have complained for years about the need to use different chargers. Apple's Lightning cable charges the device, while Android-based devices use USB Type-C connectors.

According to a 2019 Commission study, half of the mobile phone chargers sold in 2018 had a USB micro B connector. 29% had a USB Type C connector and 21% had a Lightning connector.

"The deal we reached this morning will bring about EUR 250 million (roughly Rs. 2,075 crores of savings for consumers," EU industry chief Thierry Brotteon stated in a statement.3D Tech Blog

He stated that wireless charging will allow for new technologies to emerge and mature without allowing innovation to become a source market fragmentation or consumer inconvenience.

The European Parliament stated in a statement that USB Type-C would be the common charging port for all EU mobile phones, tablets and cameras by autumn 2024.

Apple, which warned that the proposal would harm innovation and lead to an avalanche of electronic waste, didn't immediately respond to a request.

"We are proud that laptops and e-readers are included, as well as earbuds, keyboards and computer mice," stated Alex Agius Saliba, who led the parliament's debate.

Within 40 months of the legislation's entry into force, laptops must comply with it. In the future, the EU executive will be able to harmonize wireless charging systems.

Samsung, Huawei and other device manufacturers will be affected by the fact that the deal includes e-readers and earbuds.
